Daily Devotions: Boomsday Beliefs - Psalm 84

Psalm 84:11    For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor; no good thing does He withhold from those whose walk is blameless.

The Labor Day weekend is coming up and, in my adopted hometown of Knoxville, Tennessee, one of the largest fireworks celebrations takes place in the heart of downtown. The event has become so famous that it’s known as “Boomsday,” across the United States. With the college football season kicking off on the same weekend, our town’s population doubles over the next couple of days. It’s a wonderful time of celebration and our city leaders don’t spare any expenses for the whole occasion.

I like today’s highlighted verse from Psalm 84. It conveys the idea that God also wants to enjoy the goodness in our lives with a bounty of His blessings. This reminds me of the answer to the first question of the old catechism; Q: Why are we created? A: To worship God and enjoy Him forever.

So, wherever we are today and whatever we experience, let’s celebrate with God and enjoy His favor and honor. As another psalmist wrote long ago: “This is the day that the lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”

Prayer:                        Lord God, thank You for giving us this opportunity today to worship and glorify You. Enable us to see the goodness of Your works all around us and help to make the time to celebrate Your wonderful created ways. In Christ’s Holy Name, we pray. Amen.
